RULES AND GUIDELINES FOR THE 2008

“SACK OF ST. AUGUSTINE” REENACTMENT

GENERAL RULES

Appropriate “period” garb is required – see below.  No polyester clothing, garish colors, striped stockings, silly plumes, wristwatches, etc., will be allowed.

Appropriate weapons will be required – see below.  No Queen Anne pistols, medieval swords, crossbows, etc., will be allowed.

Please do not display any “skull-and-crossbones.”  There is no authoritative evidence that this famous emblem was commonly used by 17th-century buccaneers in the Caribbean.  (It wasn’t regularly used by pirates until the early 1700s).

No women pirates will be allowed.  There is no authoritative evidence that 17th-century female buccaneers were common in the Caribbean, much less participated in Capt. Searle’s 1668 raid on Spanish Florida.  Any woman who wishes to troop as a buccaneer must pass for a “man” at 10 feet.

No woman in female garb may bear arms.

No modern eyeglasses will be allowed.  Please get contacts, “period” eyeglass frames, or go without.  Most optometrists or eyeglass frame shops can fit lenses of your prescription in “period” frames.  “Period” eyeglass frames are available from:

http://www.gggodwin.com/87.htm

No cigarettes or cigars will be allowed in public areas.  Break up your cigarettes or cigars and put the tobacco in a “period” pipe.  “Period” pipes are available from:

REENACTMENT RULES

All musketeers and cannoneers must appear for inspection, with their weapons on Saturday morning.  If you miss inspection, you will not be allowed the use of your musket or cannon for the duration of the event.  This requirement applies to EVERYONE, whether first-timer or old-timer, local or from out of town.

No black powder weapons may be discharged in St. Augustine’s Historic Quarter before or after the “Sack of St. Augustine” event.

Do not touch tourists without their permission.

Do not “loot” anything that you have not been assigned to “loot.”

Do not point any weapon at anyone, for any reason, ever

Swords and knives must be sheathed in public, unless you have permission from an event marshal to unsheathe them.

Please do not use profanity or indulge in lewd behavior during the reenactment.  There will be gentlemen, ladies, and children present.  If you are unsure if a phrase or action is profane or lewd, don’t say or do it - “when in doubt, don’t.”

Please refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages until after the reenactment.  Anyone acting intoxicated will be asked to leave.

ENCAMPMENT RULES

If you intend to camp, appropriate “period” tentage will be required.  “Period” tents are available from:

http://www.jastown.com/tents/tents.htm

Please do not leave “non-period” items in a visible location in camp (e.g., beer/Coke cans, water coolers, silly wooden chairs, etc.).  The encampment will be open to the public, so please keep non-period items in the tents.  For security as well as impression it's best to keep tent flaps closed.

Appropriate “period” eating equipment will be required in the public areas of the encampment.  “Period’ eating equipment is available from:

http://www.silk.net/sirene/spoons.htm

http://www.gggodwin.com/kfsets.htm

http://www.jastown.com/pewter/pewter.htm

http://www.juliasmith.com/

Again, the encampment will be open to the public, so please keep non-period items in closed tents.

Swords and knives must be sheathed in public, unless you have permission from an event marshal to unsheathe them.

If you have allergies (e.g., medicine, food, bug/snake bite, plants, etc.) or other medical conditions, please notify the apothecary/medic or an event marshal before or at the beginning of the event.

Please treat all Fountain of Youth Park property with respect – we are guests.  Please do not harass/aggravate/molest the Fountain of Youth Park emu, peacocks, geese, ducks, etc.

If you have a question during the event, please see the event marshals.
